The Power of Positive Words

Words are powerful. Negative words can cause deep-seeded hurt and be destructive. Positive words can encourage employees and move them toward greater accomplishment and self-esteem. And, in a general way, they can also contribute to a higher level of employee morale.

Those little words -- "please", "thank you", and "job well done" – when said sincerely and merited – can have very strong impact. The catch is that it's never enough to just "think" them. For them to have impact, they must be expressed either verbally or in writing.

It's all too easy to notice an employee who's doing exceptional work and think "Wow, he or she is really doing a great job." While thinking nice things about an employee is great, unless the words are expressed, they can't be effective.

Whenever you see an employee or coworker doing a great job, be willing to make the effort to let him/her know you appreciate the good work that's being done. Simple words of appreciation, sincerely stated, are extremely powerful, highly appreciated and have important, positive consequences.
