There are no magic formulas that will instantly restore a high level of employee morale after a downsizing.

Employees will likely have to grieve both the loss of their co-workers and the loss of job security they once felt. Even though they still hold their position, ever-present feelings of doom and suspicion often haunt the workplace.

The best course of action is one where information is shared as openly as possible. Be honest, acknowledge losses, implement Employee Assistance Programs or promote existing ones, discuss emotions that employees are feeling and be a role model.

As a leader, your steadfastness and calmness will help to avoid a feeling of panic or disorientation on the part of your employees.
